North Bulgaria

The Danubian Plain

Located between the Danube River and the Stara Planina Mountains, the Danubian Plain is one of Bulgaria’s most important wine-producing areas. The region benefits from a temperate continental climate with warm summers and cold winters, creating excellent conditions for growing both white and red grape varieties.

This area is known for fresh and balanced wines.

With a long tradition of winemaking and modern techniques, the Danubian Plain continues to be a reliable source of high-quality Bulgarian wines.

Eastern Bulgaria

Black Sea Coast

The Black Sea Coast region is home to around 30% of Bulgaria’s vineyards and is especially known for its high-quality white wines. Thanks to its warm summers and mild winters, the area enjoys a long growing season. The dry, sunny autumns allow grapes to ripen slowly and develop concentrated sugars, ideal for producing expressive and well-balanced wines.

This coastal region combines a long tradition with favorable natural conditions, making it one of Bulgaria’s most important areas for white wine production.

A wide range of white grape varieties thrive here, including Dimyat, Muscat, Chardonnay and Traminer. The diverse soil types across the region add complexity and character to the wines

Among the most notable local grapes is Dimyat, an ancient Bulgarian variety valued for its versatility.

Southern Bulgaria

Thracian Valley

Located in southern Bulgaria, the Thracian Lowlands are widely regarded as the country’s premier wine region. This area enjoys a moderate continental climate with warm summers, mild winters, and well-distributed rainfall, ideal conditions for growing high-quality grapes. The vineyards benefit from a variety of soil types, including cinnamon forest soils, alluvial and deluvial deposits, and distinctive resin-rich earth.

With its perfect balance of climate, soil, and tradition, the Thracian Lowlands continue to define Bulgaria’s reputation for bold and expressive red wines.

Protected from harsh northern winds, this fertile region is especially suited to red grape varieties. Typical Bulgarian grapes as Ruby and the local favorite Mavrud thrive here, producing full-bodied, complex wines with excellent aging potential.

Mavrud, an indigenous Bulgarian grape, is the standout variety of the region. Known for its deep color, rich aromas of red fruit and spice, and firm yet smooth tannins, Mavrud is central to the identity of Thracian winemaking.

Southwestern Bulgaria

Struma River Valley

Tucked between mountain ranges in southwestern Bulgaria, the Struma River Valley is a distinctive wine region shaped by a mix of Mediterranean and continental influences. The long, warm autumns and mild winters provide ideal conditions for grape growing, while the diverse soils including cinnamon and brown forest soils, alluvial deposits, and mountain meadow soils contribute to the region’s unique terroir.

This area is particularly well-suited to red grape varieties.

In the Struma Valley, tradition, climate, and landscape come together to create wines that are unmistakably tied to their originrich, expressive, and uniquely Bulgarian.

The hallmark of the region is the local Broadleaf Melnik grape, a late-ripening variety with deep historical roots. Known for its bold flavors, spice, and excellent aging potential, Broadleaf Melnik is a true expression of the region’s heritage.

Southearstern Bulgaria

Sakar Hills

Located in southeastern Bulgaria, the Sakar Hills region is a rising star in the country’s wine landscape. Known for its unspoiled natural beauty and exceptional viticultural potential, Sakar offers a unique combination of rugged terrain and ideal growing conditions for premium wines.

The region’s hot, dry climate is balanced by seasonal rainfall and underground water reserves, making it well-suited for grape cultivation. Sakar sits on ancient volcanic ground, resulting in highly diverse soils rich in granite, quartz, clay, fossilized sea shells, and iron. All key contributors to the region’s distinct wine profiles.

Red varieties like Rubin thrive on the sun-drenched slopes, producing bold, structured wines with strong character. Meanwhile, crisp and mineral-driven white wines also emerge from the area, showcasing the terroir’s versatility.
